Advancing connected and automated mobility through real-world experimentation

Project I: Smart Watch Development and Testing

The Smart Watch project expands TTI’s Smarter Intersections research by delivering real-time alerts to pedestrians through an Apple Watch app. Using a microcontroller installed in the traffic signal cabinet, the system detects when a bus is turning and broadcasts a Bluetooth low energy signal to nearby users. The watch then vibrates and announces a warning, improving safety for pedestrians, especially blind and low-vision individuals.

Project II: Rosco Vision e-mirror – Digital Camera and Monitor System

TTI is exploring a pilot of the Rosco Vision e-Mirror system by deploying digital cameras and in-cab displays on two Texas A&M University buses. The system replaces traditional side mirrors, improving operator visibility across varying lighting and weather conditions. The pilot will evaluate performance, usability and safety benefits in real-world transit operations.
